TimeOut With The SportsDr. Podcast

Oct 23, 2023

It has been claimed that one fracture occurs every three seconds worldwide, one fracture every 15 seconds here in the United States.   When women and men have sustained a fracture, 20% go on to have another one within 1 to 5 years. Bones are not static, but dynamic living tissues that constantly remodel and adapt to changes in our lifestyle, particularly during midlife. Hence, prioritizing bone health in midlife is a key step towards ensuring a vibrant future. Therefore, investing in our bones early on establishes a strong foundation to support us in the years ahead.

However, some people believe that bone health concerns only the elderly.  Consequently, they fail to recognize its significance which can lead to missed opportunities for early intervention and prevention. Thus, we must recognize that bone health is a journey that requires tailored care. Moreover, women are encouraged to be proactive advocates for their own health, which includes but is not limited to; seeking providers who specialize in midlife care, incorporating weight-bearing exercises, and balance activities into daily routines.  Following a regiment of that nature can lay the groundwork for resilient bones.

Dr. Kristi Tough DeSapri is a board-certified internist and clinical assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and internal medicine at Northwestern Medicine. She specializes in midlife women's health, including perimenopause, menopause, and bone health. Her practice is highly specialized, providing focused attention to issues that can be overlooked in general physical exams. She recognizes the pivotal role women play in their communities, families, and workplaces, and tailors her care to meet their unique needs. She currently serves as the Director of the Northwestern Medicine Women's Bone Health Program, dedicated to preventing and treating osteoporosis for women to lead healthy, fracture-free lives.
